HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Alabama Representative Mo Brooks is questioning a report that the Department of Defense wants Congress to approve a new round of BRAC. BRAC is short for Base Realignment and Closure.

Previous BRACs led to big changes at Redstone Arsenal, including a larger workforce.

"We could be hurt by BRAC, or we could be helped by BRAC," said Brooks. "It depends on who the decision makers are and what they tend to focus on."

But Congressman Brooks wasn't certain Huntsville even needs to worry about a future BRAC.

Discussions were ongoing in Washington, DC that another round of BRAC could help lessen the blow sequestration has caused in the Department of Defense.

"I'll be mildly surprised if we have another Base Realignment and Closure Commission in the near future," said Brooks. "The chairman of the House armed services committee, Buck McKeon, has flat out said there will be no BRAC anytime soon."

Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle explained the BRAC talk comes up constantly. The city has prepared for it by doing research papers and looking at every nook and cranny Huntsville provides to the DOD.

"We're ready if it comes," said Battle. "If it doesn't, there's going to be some kind of consolidation that will come in the future. Quite frankly, you can't go on spending the kind of money that you're spending."

Talks about a new BRAC were held in a Senate armed services subcommittee last week.
