(RNN) - Swallowing a spoonful of ground cinnamon in 60 seconds without drinking water - sound familiar? Or just silly?
It's called the Cinnamon Challenge, which has become an internet sensation. Thousands of videos showing kids, adults and even celebrities attempting the challenge have been uploaded to YouTube.
But doctors say the Cinnamon Challenge poses very dangerous and potentially deadly effects.
Fueled by peer pressure, an article in the Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics said the Cinnamon Challenge is a behavioral phenomenon that often instigates risk-taking.
In 2011, 51 calls related to the Cinnamon Challenge were received by the U.S. American Association of Poison Control Centers. During the first half of 2012, 178 calls were received related to ingestion of cinnamon intentionally.
Cinnamonchallenge.com, a website devoted entirely to the Cinnamon Challenge, displays a screamer of a disclaimer: DO NOT ATTEMPT THE CINNAMON CHALLENGE! IT BURNS!
The website also warns that the challenge is practically impossible to do - although some think it's easy.
Although this latest internet craze may seem silly to some, but it is extremely popular among adolescents. According to the Cinnamon Challenge.com more 40,000 videos have been to YouTube.
In one video, three adolescents are shown, giggling nervously, all attempting the challenge together.
Two of the kids attempt to ingest the spice - which comes from tree bark - and immediately spit it out. The third lasted a little longer than the first two, but she eventually spits it out as well.
Seconds later, all three children are the sink drinking water profusely.
Health experts say trying to ingest a tablespoon of cinnamon in 60 seconds may cause choking coughing burning in nose, throat and mouth - vomiting is even a possibility.
Forbes released five reasons not to take the Cinnamon Challenge, including possible asthma attacks, and the 21st century version of "if your friends jumped of a bridge, would you?"
Just because it's on YouTube and the internet, doesn't mean you should do it.
