NWS officials confirm tornado in Fayette County

(WMC-TV) - The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-1 tornado struck east Fayette County about 3.5 miles southeast of Mason Saturday night.

The tornado began northeast of exit 35 on I-40 and ended in a wooded area to north of Old 59 Drive, about one mile east.

Fayette County Sheriff's Department officials report damage in the area of Belmont Road north of Interstate 40.

An animal rescue in Fayette County was hit by severe weather Saturday evening. Many animals were loose after the shelter was hit. They were contained Sunday morning.

Many people were without power after the storm. Crews were busy cutting down trees and trying to restore power to all areas early Sunday.

Also, a church on Belmont Road was blown off its foundation.

A barn was destroyed, several trees fell, and at least one house is damaged.

Sources tell Action News 5's own Dave Brown there were reports of people trapped in structures in Fayette County. They were immediately rescued.

One minor injury was reported. No one was displaced from their homes.

    Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening.     The Guntersville Police Department have released news details on a double shooting late Friday afternoon that left one man dead.

    The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m., when police from multiple law enforcement agencies responded to a 911 call reporting two people had been shot on Edmonds Road.
