HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Students put their bodies and their buggies thru the ringer on Friday at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

It's the 20th Annual Great Moonbuggy Race and more than 600 high school and college students from 23 states, Puerto Rico, and five countries were out at the Space and Rocket Center testing out their inventions.

They have engineered the cycles to travel on a mock moon surface, but constructing these buggies - that crash or break down frequently - is so much more.

"It all fits together with the problem solving mindset. If you can solve any problem with your moonbuggy, you can solve anything," said Frederick Stephens from East Limestone High School.

These engineering design challenges are intended to inspire students to study science, technology, engineering, and math and maybe design the next vehicle to be used on another planet!

The moonbuggy race competition will continue Saturday, rain or shine.
