VALLEY, AL (WSFA) -

Law Enforcement officials tell Columbus' WTVM 9 that in no way do they believe the teen was planning any sort of school shooting. The student told them he had the gun for protection and the gun was given to him by a relative.

ATF has been called in to help trace the ownership of the 1969 firearm to see who the last owner was and if it had been stolen or not.

Agents believe the 18 bags of marijuana found in the gym belonged to the same student who had the AK-47 and a loaded clip in his car.

The student is being held at the Lee County Detention Facility because Chambers County does not have a youth detention facility. The teen is slated to have a detention hearing Friday and it will be up the district attorney's office to decide if he will be charged as an adult. He faces drug charges and carrying a deadly weapon on to school property.

Valley High Schoo's principal could not provide any comment to WTVM citing privacy issues. The teen is still considered a juvenile. The principal could not say if the student will be kicked out or suspended. However, Alabama School policy normally dictates if a student brings a gun to campus, they are normally expelled after a disciplinary panel hearing.
