COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Suspicious letters were sent to several police agencies in Alabama, and Muscle Shoals PD, Sheffield PD, and Tuscumbia PD all received one of the letters.

Tuscumbia Police Chief Tony Logan cannot comment specifically on the case, but he said his department has increased their communication in light of the recent acts and attempted acts of violence towards law enforcement.

Logan said their number one job is to protect their citizens even if it means putting themselves in harm's way for strangers.

Between the suspicious letters in Alabama, the attacks in Boston, and the ricin letter threat in Mississippi, Logan said these events have opened dialogue between officers. He said he has been hearing a lot of talk recently between officers helping to protect one another and discussing what they would do if they found themselves faced in a crisis situation.

"Much like after September 11th, we had to kind of change the way we do business and, unfortunately, like everyone else, we get complacent sometimes, so we're just trying to reemphasis that it's important to be aware of our surroundings; realize there are some people that want to cause harm to us both through normal weaponry and things like we've seen with the ricin letters sent out to some of the politicians," he said.

Like other departments in the Shoals, Logan said they are reviewing their crisis management plans and making any changes they feel are necessary to help better protect the community.
