SCOTTSBORO, AL (WAFF) -

A man convicted in a street race in Jackson County that involved two deaths will spend two weeks in jail.

He was originally charged with manslaughter but convicted of reckless driving, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum six month sentence - and he still has that hanging over his head.

Franklin Delano Mullens, 30, was ordered to serve six months in the county jail but instead the judge gave him probation, provided he serve 14 days.

On Thursday, Mullens apologized for his role in the July 2011 wreck.

Mullens was convicted in February of reckless driving in the racing incident.

Mullens and 40-year-old Dewayne Pittman were racing their Ford Mustangs along Highway 79 south of Scottsboro when Pittman lost control and crashed into 53-year-old Thomas Glenn Frazier of Pinson, killing both of them.

Mullens' vehicle never made contact with either of the two other vehicles.

Mullens said as a result of what happened he hopes to talk to young kids about the dangers of street racing.

The judge agreed and also ordered him also to do 60 days of community service.
