East Clinton School for sale

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The old East Clinton School building is back on the market.

It comes after a plan a developer had to buy the property fell through when it got denied by Huntsville's Historic Preservation Commission.

The school has been vacant for a year, and some say the challenge of preserving history may end up damaging property values in the future.

Fair market value for the property is $1.5-million and state law says the school district can't accept anything less than that for it.

School officials said developer Bob Broadway wanted to tear down part of the historic building but keep the façade while making room for bungalow style homes.

"Save East Clinton" signs are in just about every lawn surrounding the old school and are a visual reminder of what the Historic Preservation Commission is trying to do.

District 3 School Board Member David Blair said it's a tough compromise that may challenge another offer.

"The front entrance has style and is interesting and if there a way to preserve that and incorporate that into a preservation effort on the site while taking the rest of the land and increasing the property values and the tax base of our community that to me makes sense," said Commercial real estate agent D. Scott McLain.

The school system will not maintain the building except for cutting the grass while it sits on the market.

David: Showers and storms ongoing across the Valley

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
