ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

A brand new library is in the works for Athens. The city is working with Limestone County and library officials to organize fundraising for the project.

The current library is small and cramped, and in a hard to reach location at the dead end of South Street.

The new location is the 39,000 square foot old Kroger building on Jefferson Street.

"Last night the city council accepted the low bids for phase one, that's all the air conditioning, the plumbing, the heating everything that will go into the building. It's a 2.4 million dollar project, we've kicked it off, we believe the work will start in the very near future," said Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks.

Mayor Marks believes the work should take about six months, then phase two, the actual renovation from grocery store to library, will begin immediately.
