NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Metro police are looking for a man who came very close to ripping off unsuspecting customers - but his tools weren't quite up to the job.

According to police, the suspect attached a skimming device to a Bank of America ATM machine on Nolensville Road Sunday morning.

Skimmers are devices that capture a person's credit or debit card information. They are often used with cameras that record a person's PIN number as it is typed in.

The device used in Sunday's fraud attempt didn't work very well; it came off in the hands of the first customer who tried to use it.

The bank camera captured clear shots of the suspect, and police are asking anyone who knows the man to contact Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.

Citizens can also send an electronic tip to Crime Stoppers by texting the word "CASH" along with their message to 274637 (CRIMES) or online at www.nashvillecrimestoppers.com. Persons who contact Crime Stoppers by phone, text or internet can remain anonymous.

An expert in ATM skimmer fraud, Brian Krebs, said the best way to protect yourself from ATM skimmer fraud is simple and free - cover the hand entering your PIN number with your free hand.
