MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

Three new reserve officers in Madison are now patrolling the streets.

They are a part of the reserve officer program that comes with 13 weeks of intense training,

It costs the city of Madison absolutely nothing because it is a volunteer program with reserve officers paying for everything, down to their uniforms and firearms.

Chief Larry Muncey swore in three new reserve officers and wants to add 12 more to the ranks. The chief believes they will extend their reach into the community.

They have the same training and duties like a regular officer but with one exception, they can't operate independently. They have to be with a certified officer at all times.

"These are people who are involved in the community, they realize they have a stake in it and they either have a background that drives them or suits them to this kind of job or they just have a strong desire to be able to serve," said Captain John Stringer.

The reserve officer program is growing in popularity and they have another three applicants pending.
