ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

The city of Athens is replacing recycling bins with 96-gallon garbage cans.

City council members voted Monday night to approve funds for the 3,000 containers.

These are similar to the cans used in cities like Decatur and Hartselle.

The city is also getting new recycling trucks so workers don't have to manually sift through the containers.

"We believe it's a safety issue, plus we've got a need for two recycling trucks that's anywhere from $250- to $300,000. We need two garbage trucks, so were going to single stream for the side-arm pickup that can help as backup for the other," said Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks.

The new garbage cans will be delivered to residents in July.
