LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

It has been nearly 36 hours since Terry Wayne Myers escaped the Lauderdale County Detention Center.

The sheriff believes he is headed home to Kentucky.

Sheriff Ronnie Willis said Myers has been in the detention center since he walked away from work release in March.

Deputies said he was last seen wearing a green jumpsuit inside the Lauderdale County Detention Center around 11 p.m. Sunday.

Guards reported him missing around 2:30 a.m. Monday.

Willis said Myers escaped through the ventilation system. Officials believe he made his way to the roof and then jumped down into a section free of razor wire.

It is the same way fur other inmates escaped in October of 2012.

Willis said his jailers do everything they can to keep the inmates in jail. He said the escapes happen because the building fails to provide adequate security.

"A lot of times when they sit in there, they think about what they can do and how they can get out, and our jail is a pre-slab jail where they just come in and brought sections at a time and it's easy to get out, but sooner or later, you're going to get caught and you're going to have to pay the time," Willis said.

Willis said because of budget issues, his department cannot afford to make the necessary repairs; he said it is up to the county commission to fix the problem.

He said the commission fixed the first area where the four inmates escaped and said they will have to come back and fix the others.
