HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A group of 5th graders in Huntsville received a special prize on Earth Day.

Classmates at Weatherly Heights Elementary were named this year's "Earth Day Heroes."

Operation Green Team and Verizon Wireless surprised them with their win in class on Monday.

This year's theme is reconnecting with nature. The kids were asked to draw a picture and give a pledge to help the environment.

Weatherly's principal said she is proud her kids followed the school motto, "Go the extra mile."

"The kids not only participated in this contest, but really went the extra mile. They developed an entire campaign to win, and really worked hard so that their class will win," said Principal Heather Bardwell.

For their prize, the kids will visit the Hays Nature Reserve for a half-day.

The class will also receive a new tablet.
