DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. (AP) - A barrier island on the Alabama coast is still recovering three years after the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier says the town's economy has yet to return to what it was before the spill.

Collier tells WPMI-TV ( ) many tourists have returned to the island, which is located off the coast south of Mobile.

But the mayor says Dauphin Island is still waiting to settle spill-related claims with BP.

Dauphin Island is dealing with more than the after effects of the spill.

Hurricanes have destroyed dozens of homes on the island, leaving empty lots where many homes used to be. Shifting sands have left many lots under water.
