HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

People across North Alabama celebrated Earth Day Saturday. Hundreds turned out for Huntsville's annual Earth Day celebration at Hays Nature Preserve.

The city's "Operation Green Team" sponsored the event.

Dozens of vendors displayed ways to protect the environment, from solar energy and water conservation to electric cars.

"It's a good time for everybody to get out and learn what they can do to be better stewards of our Earth. And it's so important that we think about Earth Day and that we can do small things," said Joy McKee with Operation Green Team.

The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970. This is the fourteenth year Huntsville has observed Earth Day.
