MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Students at a Madison County school are joining in the national effort to honor those injured and killed during the explosion at the Boston Marathon.

Students in Avitra Johnson's class at Legacy Elementary have been running a mile a day all this week since the explosion. On Thursday, the students were joined by physical education aide Amy Smith who finished the Boston Marathon this week.

She finished the race just minutes before the explosions.

So far the students have run a combined total of 69 miles.

They will finish up Friday having ran 91 miles in honor of Boston.
