HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

In the wake of the Boston Bombings, security is being tightened at public events and law enforcement remains on high alert.

Huntsville Police K-9 units are beefing up their training when it comes to detecting explosives. Coincidentally, HPD bomb dogs were re-certified this week.

The department has two dogs specifically trained to detect explosive materials.

The dogs are taught to seek out certain odors commonly found in explosive devices. They can detect anything from manufactured explosives, to homemade bombs, to a combination of the two.

The substances and techniques used to make bombs are constantly changing, so these K-9 units have to stay up-to-date. They are constantly training at a range in Huntsville.

The Huntsville Police Department K-9 units work in conjunction with the bomb dogs at Redstone Arsenal.

They train together in order to have a prepared plan of action in the case of an emergency.

They also work public events together. These bombs dogs are brought to virtually every large event in the Valley to do a full sweep of the venue before the event even starts.
