GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The National Transportation Safety Board spent the day trying to determine the cause of a plane crash in Lake Guntersville.

Crews removed the plane from the water Monday afternoon.

The aircraft went down Saturday after it started having engine trouble.

A pilot who saw the plane submerged in water said he talked to Thomas Kinstler, the man flying the plane, about the crash.

"He told me about his decision process on whether to put it in the water or put it on the highway. He felt at that point it was safer to put it near the yacht harbor here and he was rescued quickly," said Robert Martin, Experimental Aircraft Association.

A fisherman pulled Kinstler out of the water. He was the only person on board.

Scattered rain showers will linger this evening, especially east of I-65. There’s also a cold front still to our west that will move through the Valley with time overnight. Another round of heavier showers may develop along that front, but no severe weather is expected.
