HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A Huntsville City Councilman is under serious pressure with members of a civic group pushing for his resignation.

District 3 Councilman John Olshefski has come under fire since he was named Huntsville Utilities new Vice President of Customer Care.

Olshefski doesn't start his new position until May. However, residents in his district feel like he can't do both jobs without a conflict.

To avoid a conflict, Thursday, councilman Olshefski abstained from voting on two items on the agenda involving Huntsville Utilities which a member can do but that's just the point some residents are trying to make.

The South Huntsville Civic Association put out a call for Olshefski's resignation on their facebook saying with him abstaining from voting on issues related to utilities is essentially not giving them a vote.

"He was elected to represent south Huntsville and be our voice on major issues and even though you might not think utilities are that big of a deal but they are to a lot of people when you are working on a fixed budget or you got a family, that's a concern, said David Pinkleton V.P. South Huntsville Civic Association.

It has gone a step further with an ethics complaint sent to the Alabama Ethics Commission from

State Sen. Paul Sanford, R - Huntsville, endorsed the association's statement by sending the complaint to the Alabama Ethics Commission to determine if this is indeed a code violation of conflicts of interest of municipal officers.

"Even his own response that I need to step back from all things related to Huntsville Utilities. That's what concerned me the most is seeking a job that puts you in direct conflict with your elected capacity," said Sanford.

Councilman Olshefski was advised not to comment on this issue at this time.
