HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Senator Richard Shelby stopped in Huntsville Monday before heading back to Washington, D.C. He spoke at a breakfast put on by the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce.

There were nearly a thousand people at the breakfast. Shelby gave an update on what is happening in our nation's Capitol. He also answered questions from the crowd.

Most people had questions relating to the economy. Shelby said Madison County is the 67th county that he has visited since January and that the number one topic people have questions about is about the economy.

He also talked about gun control, North Korea's threats, and immigration reform.

The senator said he hasn't seen the details of the proposed immigration reform bill that could be unveiled this week, but he believes the solution lies in protecting our borders.

"We don't enforce our border. We don't protect our border and people come here illegally and later we say, 'oh well they've been here, maybe they should stay,' but we're supposed to be a nation of laws," Shelby said.

He left right after the meeting to head back to Washington, D.C.
