HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Autism is the fastest growing developmental disorder in the country so an event in Huntsville helped raise awareness.

The city's 11th annual "Walk for Autism" happened at Hampton Cove Middle School Saturday afternoon.

The walk benefits the Autism Society of Alabama.

A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control said nearly twice as many children have Autism than previously believed.

"Huntsville is very affected by Autism compared to other cities in Alabama, but the CDC just came out with new numbers that one in fifty children are affected by Autism in our country. And it is at an epidemic level now," said Jenny Morris of the Autism Society of Alabama.

Autism walks were held in four other locations in Alabama today, including in Athens and Fort Payne.
