GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Emergency crews responded to a plane crash near Lake Guntersville Marina Saturday afternoon.

The pilot, Thomas Kinstler, was the only person aboard the Beechcraft C23 Sundowner plane at the time. Witnesses said Kinstler was able to climb out of the plane and was picked up by a fisherman on the water.

Kinstler told police he was attempting to land at the airport nearby when his engine quit, forcing him to steer the plane into the water.

Alabama Marine Police and the Guntersville Police Department worked to secure the scene.

Kinstler was able to escape the plane uninjured.

Authorities said the plane will remain in the water until Monday when National Transportation Safety Board can investigate the crash.
