Thousand seek employment at WAFB Jobline Career Fair

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A busy day down at the Baton Rouge River Center Wednesday as hundreds came out for the WAFB Jobline Career Fair.  Job hunters and employers say there are plenty of positions open out there.

Nearly 2,000 people seeking employment filed into the Baton Rouge River Center Wednesday. But Baton Rouge Community College professor Chequita Hilliard-Young was there to help 15 of her pre-nursing students get ahead in the job hunt.

"So we're all out today looking for employment for them. They'll be soon graduating in a few weeks, and hopefully we can find some employment for them today," said Hilliard-Young.

At a time where many say jobs are few and far between for new graduates, Hilliard-Young says events like this reassure her employment is out there.

"Events like this helps them to have a venue to go to in under one location," said Hilliard-Young. "It really helps. I did not have that perspective because my girls will be able to find a job anywhere."

Michelle Newman with the Belle of Baton Rouge says even for people who are not new to the workforce, jobs are always up for grabs.

"Don't get discouraged. You obviously aren't going to get every single job you apply for, but if you consistently look for work, it is out there for whatever you're looking to do," said Newman.

Price LeBlanc Toyota has positions open in several different departments right now. Peggy Oglesby, with the company's human resources department, says it was great to talk to hundreds of people from around town who could soon fill some of their job openings and those at other companies.

"If you're looking for a job, this is definitely the place to come and put your resume in and you get to talk face to face with people that maybe you normally wouldn't get to talk with," said Oglesby.

Hilliard-Young contacted WAFB not long after the job fair ended. She says more than half of her students got calls back from employers and some even have interviews set up already.
