GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A man who wandered off into the wilderness at Lake Guntersville State Park causing a massive search faced a judge on Wednesday.

Deputies cited him when they found him for illegal use of facilities.

As part of a plea agreement with prosecutors, the man from Madison County has been barred from the state park forever.

Sachin Kapoor, 25, who goes by the name Sanjay, entered a guilty plea Wednesday morning to camping in an unauthorized area.

Besides being barred from the park, Kapoor was also ordered to pay a $500 fine and court costs.

Kapoor left on a walk away from his family in December 2012, and when he did not return, family members called park officials, prompting an extensive 24 hour search in the park by several agencies.

Park officials said all along he was never considered to be a missing person.

His mother said at the time he had done this before and believed he was trying to reach a summit part of the park for a religious experience.

After an extensive search, Kapoor showed up to his chalet at the park more than 24 hours later.

Wednesday, he apologized.

"I didn't realize all this drama was going to happen when I did what I did.  I was never in any danger and if I had known all of this would happen, so many people would be inconvenienced, I probably would head in a very different way," he said.

Kapoor said he plans to try to make sure something like this doesn't happen again in the future.
