Storms could bring damaging wind, hail, twisters to North AL

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A developing spring storm system that is bringing the risk of severe weather and snow and ice to the Plains is expected to move into North Alabama on Thursday morning.

Ahead of the storm, strong southerly winds will warm temperatures back into the lower 80s today.  An isolated shower is possible this afternoon, but no severe weather is expected.

Tonight a line of strong to severe thunderstorms will be moving towards the Mississippi River. This line will be racing out ahead of the main cold front. The line will weaken during the overnight hours but once the cold front catches back up with the rain the line will reform and could become severe as it moves into the Tennessee Valley Thursday morning.

The primary threat with will be the potential for damaging straight line winds 50-70mph.  By Thursday afternoon the line will get stronger as it moves from west to east and there will be the potential for some quick spin up EF0-EF1 type tornadoes as the line gets east of I-65 and moves towards Madison, Jackson, DeKalb, Marshall and eastern Morgan counties.

Storms are expected to arrive in the Shoals between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., the I-65 corridor, including the Huntsville Metro, between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. and Marshall, Jackson, DeKalb Counties by 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
