Hartselle High considers digital switch

Hartselle High is in the early stages of saying goodbye to books and hello to computers.

Principal Jeff Hyche said the switch has been talked about for years, and now they are working on putting those words into action while watching larger schools systems that have already made the switch - like Huntsville.

"We want to proceed but be diligent about it because there's a lot to learn, and we want to learn what the Huntsville folks have to say about it," he said.  "I know there are a lot of good things, but there is also trouble, so we would like to learn from their mistakes as we go forward."

Students like senior Matthew Watson are excited about the pending changes.

"It will definitely make things easier because we wouldn't have to waste time going to our lockers between classes, and we wouldn't have the strain of backpacks getting in the way," Watson said.

Hyche said he isn't too worried about how the students will adjust to the digital switch.

"The biggest thing you've got to do is change teachers," he said.  "You can't just throw technology at them without lots of training and prep time."

In the meantime, school officials are working to figure out funding for the new idea.

"They've set aside what comes in from the state for technology, and there are other pots they've looked at," Hyche said.

As of right now, there is no exact start date for the digital switch. Hyche said he hopes to get a better idea as the year continues and they observe other school systems who have already gone digital.

In the meantime, teachers and students are allowed to BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) to use as instrumental tools.  Wi-Fi is expected to be in all the Hartselle City Schools by the next school year.
