HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville Police are investigating a street confrontation that turned into a shooting that left one man dead.

It started at Salem Drive and Melody Road in northeast Huntsville and ended on Meridian Street on the outskirts of Alabama A&M.

Crime scene investigators have been going over the first scene at the intersection of Salem and Melody where witnesses say the victim was shot.

According to police, the 50-year-old man managed to drive his red Hyundai as far as Chase Road and Meridian Street, where he stopped the car and called 911.

He was rushed to Huntsville Hospital, but he died there.

Witnesses said two men, well known in that neighborhood, got into a confrontation with the victim.

One witness said she was shouting at the gunman to stop as he fired shot after shot.

"Went over to this red car and started talking to the person.  Then he jumped back right quick and started shooting.  And then [he] said, 'He's going to drive off with my stuff.' Then they shot about five times, and then the car they were shooting at ran down the street and went down Chase Road, 'cause I was standing in my door.   And [he] was running behind the car, and he shot about twice… And then they come back here and got in [his] truck, and both of them took off that way [chasing him]," the witness said.

Witnesses said the gunman and his companion took off in a black and white Kia SUV.

Police said they are not releasing the identity of the victim until they can reach his family.

The investigation is ongoing.
