Ammunition demand a concern for law enforcement agencies

MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Ever since talk of renewed gun control started around three months ago, stores have had a problem keeping up with demand for ammunition, which is causing a concern for many law enforcement agencies.

It is also causing a problem for area departments as far as police training.

Some agencies said they have not received a new box of ammo from their distributors in months.

Guntersville Police practice on a range in Arab, but they have not been able to obtain target ammunition since before December of 2012.

Officer Karl Keller said they found out last December much of the supply was on back order for approximately six months.

Officers usually train periodically with their weapons throughout the year.

Shotgun ammo has not been in high demand. Keller said this has prompted them to train only with shotgun ammo the first part of the year then wait and hope pistol and rifle ammo will arrive in the coming months.

But don't think they won't be able to protect you or themselves.

Keller said they always keep a good reserve of live ammo for their service weapons that are used on the street.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
