HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Lee and New Century High School used Friday morning's rush hour to warn kids about the dangers of texting and driving.

It looked like a frightening scene on campus, but it was only a mock crash.

School officials joined HEMSI and police to stage a wreck that could result from drinking or texting and driving.

The goal was to remind students how dangerous such behavior can be.

Students taking part said the timing was right for the demo.

"During prom season, you know teenagers: They go overboard, they start drinking, they start texting as they're driving after prom, or after graduation they think they're adults still and they start to mess up, so we make sure to let them know this can happen to you and you don't want that," said Lee High 12th grader, Charles Ratliff.

Students attended an assembly after the mock accident to talk about the dangers of texting and driving.
