SCOTTSBORO, AL (WAFF) -

April is Sexual Assault Awareness month.

On Thursday, many people took part in a ceremony in Scottsboro to help raise awareness about the issue at the Scottsboro City Hall.

Officials wanted to let victims know they were there for them and also send a message that one assault is one too many.

Speakers told the group that by the age of 18, one in every four females and one in every six males are a victim to a sexual assault.

Today's technology puts kids at an even greater risk.

While there were many people who spoke at the event, officials said flowers would also be planted outside City Hall to help remember those victims of sexual assault.

"You are like a beautiful flower and you can survive.  You can survive.  And you have the support of this community to survive this terrible assault that has occurred," said Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, Traci Bynum.

Officials said there is something you can do to remember sexual assault awareness each day of this month.
