HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

On Thursday, Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle will declare April as Autism Awareness Month in the Rocket City.

Mayor Battle will make the announcement at a ceremony at the Academy for Academics and Arts School. The declaration comes days after President Barack Obama announced his BRAIN Initiative on Tuesday. BRAIN stands for Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies.

The initiative focuses on revitalizing research efforts to better understand the way the human mind works. The president hopes the plan will create ways to treat or possibly cure brain disorders like Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, and autism.

The initiative is launching with about $100 million dollars in funding. Several agencies support the plan, including The National Institutes of Health, the Defense Research Projects Agency, and the National Science Foundation.

President Obama also says that several other foundations and private institutes are investing, which will advance the BRAIN Initiative into the future.
