HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

As the Home Brew Bill heads to the Alabama House on Tuesday, Straight to Ale Brewery in Huntsville held a special event Saturday to encourage support for the bill.

Home brewers brought their own recipes and made them legally at the brewery for people to try.

"In a business it is not that easy to take risks and formulate oddball recipes. We have totally off-the-wall beer recipes here that people can try," said home brewer Rich Edmondson.

Home brewers and breweries alike are doing everything they can to bolster support for the bill.

Straight to Ale helped spread the word through and invited local home brewers to bring their recipes and make their beers on site.

"We're not just a bunch of hacks trying to make some gin in the bathtub. It's nothing like that at all. It's a real hobby. It's about the technical aspect and creating something at home that you can maybe get in a store," explained home brewer Scott Oberman.

Home brewers said legalizing their hobby could boost the economy.

"There is the possibility of opening businesses to support the hobby. People have to buy the equipment and they have to buy ingredients. Also, every craft brewery in Alabama was started by a home brewer," said Edmondson.

Alabama is the final frontier when it comes to legalizing home brewing. It's already legal in 49 other states.

"Somebody has to be last, right? I don't care if we are last as long as we get it done," said Oberman.

House Bill 9, sponsored by Huntsville Representative Mac McCutcheon is set to take the floor April 2nd.
