IRS gives police more power to crack down on I.D. theft

MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

The IRS is now giving local law enforcement more power when it comes to cracking down on tax identity theft.

The feds have launched a new program to help police pursue the thieves and protect the taxpayers.

As of now, police do what they can to take care of the problem but often have to hand over the cases to the IRS.

That is because the thieves are tough to track down and may be in another state.

Now the IRS is giving local law enforcement more resources through a new assistance program.

It will help officers get a hold of tax return data vital to investigating and prosecuting these cases.

Federal law limits the sharing of tax payer information, but now taxpayers will have the option to allow local law enforcement to see it.

The victim will fill out a special disclosure form to the IRS and in turn, the IRS will send the fraudulently filed tax return to the police.

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
