Springfield teacher allegedly drunk while chaperoning field trip

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, TN (WSMV) -

A Robertson County high school teacher is out of the classroom after police say he got drunk while he was supposed to be supervising a student trip to East Tennessee.

Jared Phy, an agriculture teacher at Springfield High School, was chaperoning 10 students at a Future Farmers of America convention in Gatlinburg.

Officers were called to Phy's hotel room at 4 a.m. about a noise complaint, and there they say they found Phy and another chaperone - who's not a teacher at the school - intoxicated.

Police tried to kick them out of the hotel, but the two told officers they were responsible for students at the hotel.

That's when police decided to notify school officials.

A supervisor and an assistant principal went to Gatlinburg to take over, and those students were due back in Springfield on Thursday.
