HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A contract worker for Huntsville City Schools is out of a job for using corporal punishment.

The worker was fired last week after allegations he spanked a 2nd grader.

Nearly a year ago, the Huntsville school board decided to do away with corporal punishment, even though it is still legal in Alabama.

Huntsville school spokesman Keith Ward said physically disciplining a child will not be tolerated.

"We had this information that a contract employee had administered corporal punishment - a clear violation of our policy - and subsequent to that, that contract was terminated," said Ward.

Huntsville schools have not released the name of the worker or the school where he worked.
