PIKE ROAD, AL (WSFA) -

The former Kirksey store building in the Town of Pike Road stood in the same spot near Merriweather Road for more than two centuries.

"[It took] steel supports to keep the building standing. It has been comprised structurally, but no one wanted to see the building go because it was a landmark of this area," Town of Pike Road Communication Director Mary Catherine Barganier said.

Bargainer says it was demolished a few weeks ago, but the building blocks of the structure will be preserved. Now all the bricks from that historic building that was built in 1890 will be turned into a new resource center.

"And that's why we are so excited that the family that owned the building worked with us and allowed us to take it apart, dismantle it, save the bricks, clean them up and we're going to move them right across the street and build a new landmark here in the heart of old Pike Road," Bargainer said.

That new resource center will be on the property of the old Town Hall that closed in 2010.

"This resource center will sort of form an anchor for what we're calling the old town hall resource park. All over this 10 acre parcel here at the corner of Pike Road and Merriweather Road, the Town of Pike Road will have a community presence," Bargainer said.

Bargainer says construction will begin later this spring.

"We hope to have that building finished and ready for occupation by community groups and museum of Pike Road history by the fall of this year," Bargainer said.

David: Showers and storms ongoing across the Valley

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
