LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A Huntsville construction worker was taken to the hospital Wednesday after he was buried alive in the collapse of a trench.

Huntsville firefighters rushed to the scene off Seeger Road in Limestone County where a construction crew had been digging a trench for a sewer line.

One side of the trench caved in, completely burying one of the workers in the deepest part of the trench. And to make the situation even more unstable and dangerous, the victim's companions were trying to dig him out with the same heavy equipment they'd been using to dig the trench.

"They were trying to dig him out with the machine.  We stopped the guy from digging.  That's not what we want to happen there," said Steve Britton with the Huntsville Fire Department. "Continued digging, got him out, and he was transported to the hospital."

Emergency crews and the victim's coworkers managed to dig the man out by hand.

He was taken to Huntsville Hospital in stable condition.

Firefighters said he was conscious and talking as he was taken to safety.
