Opelika installs red light cameras to improve highway safety

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) -

Some of Opelika's busiest intersections now have red light cameras installed with the goal of saving lives.

Beginning Monday April 1, red-light safety cameras will be turned on at four different intersections, capturing still images and video of red-light running violations.

"Some folks say it's like Big Brother, but it's today's technology and it extends our police department," says Opelika Mayor, Gary Fuller.

Red-Light Safety Cameras are located at the intersections of:

  • Frederick Road at US 280/Gateway Drive
  • US 280/Gateway Drive at HWY 15/Pepperell Parkway
  • US 280/Gateway Drive at I-85 Off-ramp/Interstate Drive
  • HWY 15/West Point Parkway at US 431/Fox Run Parkway/Lafayette Parkway

"We could add intersections later, but these are the four right now that we think are the most dangerous and where most of the red light running occurs," explains Fuller.

During the month of April, a "courtesy warning notice" will be issued to the vehicle's registered owner, but there will be no fines levied.

Beginning in May, violations with a fine of $60 will be issued to motorists who ignore the traffic signals.

However, no points will be added to your license.

"There will be a sworn officer that will review all pictures on a daily basis and will make the decision on whether or not to issue the citation and if you think there is something wrong, there is an appeal process," explains Fuller.

The system is not costing Opelika any tax dollars.

The service provider installed and will maintain the system, and will be compensated by splitting the fines with the city.

With fewer property damage claims, lower insurance premiums, and reduced medical expenses, one red-light safety camera could save Opelika and its residents nearly 90 thousand dollars a year.

However, the most important benefit in every case remains the lives that are saved.
