RUSSELLVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A Franklin County man is facing murder charges for a killing that happened more than 30 years ago.
John Donald Smith was indicted by a Franklin County Grand Jury for the February 16th, 1980 murder of Larry Graham.
According to sheriff's deputies, Smith and another man - Melvin Rickard - confronted Graham at a trailer park in Phil Campbell. Evidence shows that Smith cut Graham's throat from behind.
Investigators tell us that the case went cold for decades, but was reopened in February of 2012 when new evidence surfaced and new witnesses came forward. After running the evidence through the Alabama Department of Forensic Services lab, a case came together that resulted in the indictment.
Smith was already being held in the Franklin County Jail on unrelated charges.
