BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

City leaders are discussing the recent tragedy at the Birmingham airport. Luke Bresette died Friday, March 22 after a flight display board fell on top of him. It also injured his mother and two siblings.

Mayor William Bell says the city did not inspect the sign that fell on top of the Bresette family. The Kansas City family was on the way home from a vacation in Florida.

The cabinet weighed more than 300 pounds and was exempted from city inspection because it was not a structural component of the building. A city attorney told the Associated Press that the unit was a "free-standing cabinet housing video monitors that rested on the floor, similar to a home entertainment center."

"It's strictly up to the airport authority to regulate and maintain those signs," Mayor Bell said. "I have been meeting with them for many hours since this tragedy occurred to make sure we give them a through accounting as to how this tragedy happened."

The investigation of the accident continues. Councilor Steven Hoyt, who sits on the airport authority, says the head of the authority met with contractors Monday. Hoyt did not learn what was said at the meeting and offered his prayers to the family.

Monday, a UAB spokesperson said that Heather Bresette, Luke's mother, was in serious condition at UAB hospital, but is said to be improving. Another injured son has been treated and released and another son is in fair condition at Children's of Alabama hospital.
