High School coach accused of punching athlete during brawl

A Columbus family is calling foul on an East Alabama baseball coach.  The coach appeared before a judge Monday afternoon with dozens of witnesses by his side.

Russell County High School Junior varsity baseball coach George Garland was summoned to court Saturday after being accused of  throwing out punches instead of plays at a game against Northside High School.

The parents of a 15 year-old Northside athlete filed a police report against 25 year-old Garland, stating he punched their son in the face during a brawl between players.

Garland did not enter a plea during the preliminary hearing; he seemed calm and confident as he stated he would speak for himself due to not being able to find an attorney over the weekend. Garland asked for a continuance while the Alabama Education Association Union helped him locate an attorney.

A representative with the AEA stood by Garland's side along with at least a dozen supporters during the hearing.

A continuance was granted.  Garland is scheduled to be back in court April 8th at 2 p.m. He's charged with simple battery; the charge can carry up to one year in jail.
