SCOTTSBORO, AL (WAFF) -

Residents in Scottsboro are coming together to remember the role the Scottsboro Boys played in the fight for American Civil Rights.

It was 82 years ago that nine young black teenagers were arrested and falsely accused of raping two white women.

Monday, residents remembered the Scottsboro Boys by lighting candles for each of the nine young men who were charged with the crime.

The boys had hopped a train looking for work but instead were jailed when they came through Jackson County.

Initially, they were all found guilty by all white juries, but retrials prompted charges being dropped for some while others were sent to prison despite one of the victims recanting, saying they had fabricated the story of being raped.

All but two were ordered to serve prison time ranging from 75 years to life.

The last surviving defendant died in 1989.

Jackson County State Representative John Robinson said he currently has a bill that is making its way through the legislature which would exonerate the Scottsboro Boys.

Robinson said there is no opposition to the bill and said the governor has said he would sign it when it is passed.
