PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

Police have identified the nude man that died in custody Sunday night while trying to elude Lee County authorities.

Khari Neville Illedge, 25, was from the Columbus area and was identified through fingerprints.

Around 7:40 p.m., dispatch received a call from a residence on Lee Road 308 near the Lee-Russell county line in North Phenix City.

The caller reported that Illedge, covered in nothing but scratches, had entered their home and was acting in an aggressive manner.

"They said he was refusing to answer their questions, refusing to leave their property and then at one point he did finally run from them," explains Sheriff Jay Jones of the Lee County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies responded within minutes and found the man running on Pierce Road attempting to enter another residence.

Trying to control him, the deputies deployed a tazer which had no effect on him.

"He continued to fight with the deputies and they redeployed the tazer and it had no affect on him the second time. They were finally able to get him handcuffed. At this point he was still struggling and kicking at the deputies," says Jones

The Deputies, with help from Phenix City police, were attempting to secure the man when he passed out.

CPR was performed immediately and he was transported to the Jack Hughston Medical Facility where he was later pronounced dead.

Now the case is being turned over the Alabama Bureau of Investigations.

"He was incoherent and it was a circumstance where there were minor injuries to the officers and other involved law enforcement personnel," said  Jones. "They're going to be fine, but again the situation was very dangerous circumstances."

The suspect is described as a black male between five and six feet in height and weighing between 200 and 230 pounds with short hair and a light beard.

A postmortem exam was performed at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery. Preliminary results did not indicate any obvious cause of death.

We are now waiting for toxicology testing.
