FRANKLIN COUNTY, TN (WAFF) -

A rockslide happened where a transportation contractor was already working on Tennessee Route 16 in Franklin County, north of Jackson County, Alabama.

The slide closed the road near mile 18 around dawn Monday. A Tennessee Department of Transportation news release said only local passenger car traffic is being allowed to use a narrow detour called Iron Gap Road.

Less than 800 vehicles use the section of Route 16 on an average day.

Because contractor Highways, Inc., already had a crew on the site, the company and state officials began assessing what must be done to reopen the highway.

The TDOT will post updates on their SmartWay website and information can be obtained by calling 511.
