BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The uncle of a two-year-old boy killed this weekend in Birmingham is in custody.

Andre Boykins Jr., a 24-year-old from Birmingham, is suspected of shooting his two-year-old nephew Nazario Boykins to death and wounding the boy's mother, who is his sister.

The incident happened around 12:10 a.m. Saturday, March 23 at 913 8th Avenue West. Police say they are investigating the homicide as a domestic incident.

Birmingham West Precinct officers arrived to find the mother in a chair suffering from gunshot wounds. She directed officers to where her young son had also been shot. Police called their injuries "serious."

Both victims were transported to UAB Hospital. Nazario was transported from UAB Hospital to Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead around 2:56 p.m. Saturday.

The mother is expected to recover from her injuries, police say.

Police said the child's mother provided investigators with information about the suspect. Authorities located the boy's uncle, Andre Boykins, in Prattville. He is now in custody of the Prattville Police Department and investigators are working to transfer Boykins back to Birmingham.

An attempted murder warrant has been obtained against Boykins for shooting his sister, and investigators anticipate obtaining a murder warrant against Boykins for the death of his nephew, Sgt. Johnny Williams with Birmingham Police said.

Anyone with information pertaining to the case should call the BPD Homicide Unit at 254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
