BRIDGEPORT, AL (WAFF) -

Students in Jackson County got a lesson on the Civil War in an outdoor classroom.

Soldiers shared stories about life during the Civil War as they prepare for a reenactment this weekend.

"I think it's pretty fascinating.  My favorite part was the cannon," said Bridgeport 5th grader, A.J. Moody.

For some teachers, stepping back in time to the battlefield of the Civil War for a giant outdoor classroom is a dream come true.

"Five weeks in the book on this and they wouldn't remember a thing, but days like today they'll carry with them forever," said Bridgeport Middle School Principal Anthony Buckner.

School kids from across Jackson County got a chance to see the life of a Civil War soldier.

"Let them experience and let them hear the story that those particular re-enactors have to tell," said Sgt. Jere McCraw, of the 1st Alabama Infantry Division.

These kids got a chance to learn about the different flags and shop for Civil War items, including good old fashioned root beer.

But they also learned about the life of a soldier roughing it in a tent, eating from the outdoor grill, and dealing with the elements during war. Not as rosy a picture when looking back.

"How it was a very Spartan life, very much a Spartan life.  But they accepted their lot and they went on," said McCraw.

The Siege at Bridgeport 2013 is set for this weekend. The battle will be held Saturday and Sunday.  Gates open each day at 10 a.m. and the battles will be held both days at 2 p.m.

It will be located on County Road 255 in Bridgeport.

The cost is $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens, and $3 for children.
