FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Several dogs in the Shoals area are on their way to the find new homes in the Big Apple.

A New York based rescue group has rounded up nearly a dozen dogs to take home with them.

Volunteers say it's the only way to save these dogs.

"We have really great adoptable sweet dogs that don't need to be put down. They're being put down because of pet overpopulation," said animal advocate Sara Cross.

Cross founded the rescue group in Brooklyn.

Like many, Cross and a group of volunteers work around the clock trying to find homes for sheltered dogs.

"I wish we didn't have to do this. I wish that people just went to the shelter and adopted and spayed and neutered their pets," said Cross. "It's much worse in the South. It tends to be a larger pet overpopulation problem in the South than it is in the North."

Cross picked up nearly a dozen dogs from the Florence-Lauderdale Shelter on Thursday in hopes of giving them a new beginning.

"There's nowhere for these dogs to go," Cross said. "You can't continue to dump them off at the shelter because they're going to be killed."

Go and talk with volunteers at your local animal shelter if you want to help.
