HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - With just three games left in the regular season, and the team hanging on to the final playoff spot by the skin of their teeth, the Huntsville Havoc were dealt a serious blow Wednesday night.
Goalie Dan McWhinney, who has shouldered the majority of the workload between the pipes this season, was rushed to Huntsville Hospital for an emergency appendectomy.
McWhinney broke the news on his Twitter account Thursday morning, saying "Just got out of surgery and feeling decent. #byeappendix" He even tweeted what he dubbed a "Hospital Selfy" of himself in a hospital gown in recovery bed.
McWhinney had started 47 games for the Havoc this season and posted an 18-21-6 record with a 2.82 goals against average and a 91.8 save percentage. He has recorded three shutouts. He is tied for third in the SPHL in wins, eighth in goals against average and tied for fourth in save percentage.
Former Havoc goaltender, Ross Cherry, will serve as the emergency backup tonight as Jesse Kallechy gets the start.
The Havoc will host the Knoxville Ice Bears tonight on Breland Homes Ice at Propst Arena before traveling to Knoxville on Friday night. They will return home on Saturday night against the Fayetteville FireAntz for the final game of the season. They remain three points ahead of Augusta for the eighth and final playoff spot.
