MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The Heart of the Valley YMCA wants every child to live a healthy and active life.

The Y is offering an eight week program called Go Kids that is designed to fight childhood obesity.

It is free to members and non-members alike. It is designed for kids ages 6 through 12.

During the course, the kids work with a personal trainer and learn how to develop healthy eating habits from a nutritionist.

"They are learning the value of eating correctly, how many servings are appropriate for their age, how many servings of vegetables, fruits, dairies," said personal trainer, Hope Feder.

"The main thing is stabling healthy lifestyle habits because if we can get them to start creating healthy lifestyle habits now more than likely they will carry them into adulthood as well," said Sharon Allen with the YMCA.

The program is funded by the Alabama Alliance of YMCAs and the Alabama Department of Education.

The next Go Kids will start April 2 at the Hogan YMCA in Madison. To sign your child up, call the Y at 256-883-9622.
